Entry Requirements for austria

EU citizens can reside or visit Austria with a valid ID card or passport.  All non-EU citizens should inform  themselves in their home country  about the current entry requirements at an Austrian consulate or an Austrian embassy.

ATTENTION: The driver’s license does not count as an identity card!

IMPORTANT: Please keep your passport or identity card with you at all times. This is necessary to prove your identity.

Currency

Austria is part of the European Union and the national currency is the EURO (€).

The EURO is denominated in banknotes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 €. Coins: 1 and 2 € as well as 1,2,5,10,20 and 50 cent.

Domestic and foreign Maestro cards (bankomat cards) are accepted at Austria’s ATMs.
Other cash withdrawal cards are domestic and foreign MasterCard, American Express, Visa and Diners credit cards as well as the Cirrus and Visa Plus cash withdrawal cards belonging to these payment systems.

Road traffic

If driving in Austria, make sure you have with you all documentation, including your full, valid driving licence, proof of insurance/green card, proof of ID (passport) and proof of ownership (V5C Certificate).

Vignettes are compulsory on Austria’s motorways. A 10-day toll sticker for a car is available for € 9,90,-.
The sticker must be visibly affixed to the inside of the windscreen.

In Austria, in addition to a first-aid kit and a warning triangle, a high-visibility waistcoat for the driver is a compulsory standard item of car equipment.

Don‘t forget: Austrians drive on the right-hand side of the road.

In Austria in case of a traffic jam on the motorway, it is obligatory to form an emergency lane (not the emergency lane itself, but if the circumstances allow, a lane in the middle of the motorway to let emergency vehicles pass.
